When it comes to men's grooming, achieving the perfect beard can seem as elusive as a myth. we're here to shed light on one crucial aspect - the best beard growth oils.

Do beard oils really work? How do they contribute to your beard growth? We'll unravel the science behind these questions, guiding you towards that ideal beard you've been dreaming of. With a focus on oils like Castor, Peppermint, Argan, and an intriguing blend of seed oils, we're going to have quite a lot to explain here. We tried dozens of different beard oils before we came to a conclusion of what was best and we’ve been able to narrow it down to 3 options.

So, we're going to cover quite a few beard oils, their ingredients, and their impact on your beard. From eliminating beard itch and beardruff to stimulating hair growth, and yes we do have a clear winner when it comes to the best beard oil.

What Does Beard Oil Do?

Beard oil plays an essential role in providing essential nutrients and hydration necessary for beard growth. They're designed to mimic the natural oils produced by the skin, known as sebum. When used properly, these oils soften the beard, give it a slight shine, and preserve its overall health.

One of the most significant benefits of using beard oil is its ability to combat beard itch and beardruff (beard dandruff). These common issues are often due to dry skin under the beard, and a high-quality beard oil moisturizes both the beard and the skin underneath. Its regular application provides a favorable environment for healthy beard growth.

In addition to providing moisturizing effects, beard oils contain specific essential oils known for their hair growth properties. These include castor oil, peppermint oil, and avocado oil, among others. These oils help in thickening the hair strands, promote hair growth, and make the beard look fuller and robust.

Mengine Oil – Best Beard Oil Overall

Price: $29

Ingredients: Argan, Mint, Cedarwood, Thyme, Lavender and Rosemary

Mengine Beard Oil is straight up the best option on the market right now when it comes to looking after your beard hair. Its hallmark lies in the use of standardized extracts in it's essential oils. The reason this is important is that there can be a wild variation in the active ingredients in any essential oil for example Thyme Oil could contain 1% Thymol or 50% Thymol. So in standardizing their extracts they're ensuring you receive ample active ingredients vital for a thriving beard. Which is why they actually offer a money back guarantee on a thicker and healthier beard. (And we did verify this with our mystery shopper, they honored the no questions asked policy that they say they have).

And Mengine Oil hits all the bases, methol, thymol, cedarwood, lavendar and Mengine oil makes a point of utilizing the very best carrier oil there is - argan oil. Lauded as liquid gold, this nourishing substance polishes and conditions your beard, leaving it touchably soft and visibly glossy. And seeing as there's no cheap seed oil in here, or artificial ingredients, they come out as the best beard oil by far.

Pros

  • All natural oils
  • Standardized extracts
  • Money back guarantee

Cons

  • Not the cheapest option

Our Experience

So, we did have a blind internal testing group, and whilst it wasn't the most scientific of experiments because it did rely on self reporting, but MengineOil scored highest by a long margin on all fronts. A couple of people said they thought the mint smell cut through a bit too much for the first hour after putting it on, but that was the only real complaint. All in all everyone reported a fuller thicker beard and whilst I wasn't in the MengineOil test group originally I did give it a go, and have to say that even though I only had it for a 6 week period noticed it was substantially better than the Artiusman group that I was in. Thus, MengineOil is our clear favorite for coarse hair and fine hair alike. The only people who we'd maybe say should get something else would be if you have very oily skin underneath as argan can be a little heavy.

Titan Groom – Best Beard Light Oil for Daytime Use

Price: $25

Ingredients: Jojoba, Coconut Oil, Cedarwood, Thyme, Caffeine and Peppermint

Heavy beard oils are not for everybody. They make your beard sticky, and can be a nuisance during the first hours of applying them. That’s why Titan Groom is our number 2 choice, and the ideal beard oil to use it during the day.

It contains jojoba oil instead of argon, which is much lighter and gets absorbed by your skin quicker. That way, you will not have a fatty beard for hours. Besides, Titan Groom essential oil uses high quality natural oils, including coconut oil, which moisturises the skin underneath the beard, and together with caffeine opens your follicles to allow more hair growth.

Therefore, the formula by Titan Groom stimulates beard growth and thickness, while preventing dandruff caused by dry skin.

Pros

  • Lighter oil, perfect for daily use
  • Helps opening hair follicles for better growth and thickness
  • Good to remove beard patchiness

Cons

  • Only available in their website

Our Experience

While MengineOil was the best scoring oil in our blind test in most aspects, Titan Groom was preferred by those who weren’t used to beard oils. Even though they notice that the protection from external factors wasn’t as prominent, they felt more comfortable wearing it throughout the day. Some of the testers also said that their partners preferred when they were using Titan Groom during the day, as their face wasn’t sticky and fatty to the touch. Titan Groom was also praised by its ability to thicken the beard, although people with already thick beards preferred the protection and smoothening potential of MengineOil.

Mad Viking Beard Oil - Best Beard Growth Oil On A Budget

Price: $19.99

Ingredients: Sweet Almond Oil (cold pressed), Apricot Kernel Oil (cold pressed), Argan Oil Virgin (cold pressed), Jojoba Oil Golden Organic (cold pressed), Avocado Oil (cold pressed), Hempseed Oil refined (cold pressed), Grapeseed Oil Organic (cold pressed), Vitamin E Oil (Alpha Tocopherol)

So, if you’re on a budget then Mad Viking is a good option, it’s paraben and inorganic compound free although it does lean in to some of the cheaper carrier oils such as avocado and grapeseed oils. It does have a bit of added vitamin e which is a nice touch and it definitely is great for conditioning and styling.

The downside is that it does miss out on some of the ingredients that are a bit better for stimulating growth like thyme and rosemary. But, it’s a nice light oil for day to day beard oils.

Pros

  • Lighter oil, perfect for daily use
  • Nice scent

Cons

  • Misses out on some of the best growth oils

Our Experience

The test group said it was a great beard oil and loved the smell, they didn’t report much in terms of improved growth, but did say it was great for smoothing and styling and they noticed a bit of extra thickness in the hairs from the conditioning ingredients in Viking.

BeardBrand Utility Beard Oil – Best Oil for Scent

Price: $36

Ingredients: Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Fragrance, Tocopherol

We like Beardbrand, their Utility Oil is good, but it's hard to justify it being more expensive than our number one spot. So despite our love of BeardBrand Beard Oil it comes in second.

Beard Brand Utility beard oil relies heavily on its natural ingredients to foster beard growth. Unlike Mengine oil which uses standardized extracts like menthol and thymol, BeardBrand embraces a more traditional, organic path.

However, this doesn’t mean BeardBrand compromises on effectiveness as you would probably expect our test groups rated it the second most highly, it wasn't as good for thickening up existing facial hair and scored lower on beard growth, it did score highly on scent though. And users reported a noticeably natural and healthier looking beard.

As for usage, it's just as simple as any other beard oil. A small amount massaged into the beard can do wonders, and signs of improvement may be visible within a reasonable timeframe.

And although this oil qualifies as an excellent beard growth solution for some, it may not deliver the same results for others. Mengine oil's use of premium carrier oil, argan oil, might be missed by users who've become accustomed to its conditioning effects. It could be better for people with greasier skin underneath their beard hairs though.

Pros

  • Smelling great
  • Good for facial hair growth

Cons

  • A bit overpriced
  • Not the best beard oil for coarse hair

Artiusman Beard Oil – Runner Up Budget

Price: $20

Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, butyrospermum parkii (Shea) seed oil, argana spinosa (argan) kernel oil, sclerocarya birrea (marula) seed & adansonia digitata (baobab) seed oil, tocopheryl (vitamin E) acetate, essential oils

As we continue our exploration of top-notch beard oils, let's not forget artiusman beard oil, a product that stands out in the beard maintenance market for a number of reasons. Often lauded for its all-natural blend of potent ingredients, it's an option that many men turn to for a more organic beard growth experience. It's also the cheapest of our top 3. I was actually in this particular test group for our best beard oils article, and it's good. Just not all I was hoping for.

Part of the problem for Artiusman is just quite simply like with all things you get what you pay for and the best beard oils are no exception. The base oil is the cheaper castor, with sunflower seed oil and a bit of argania spinosa kernel oil mixed in.

The essential oils aren't the best beard oils to promote healthy growth and thickness although if you're after the best scent variety then Atrius has got you covered as there's plenty to choose from and they did smell fantastic.

Pros

  • Good Price
  • Wide range of scents

Cons

  • Cheaper ingredients
  • Not great for growth

And the test group pretty much echoed my sentiments, loved the smell, it conditioned fine, but nobody really noticed a substantial boost in growth. So, if you're just looking to condition and to smell good ArtiusMan Beard Oil is an option worth considering.

The Benefits of Using a Beard Oil

The grooming market is flooded with a myriad of beard oils, all promising to deliver the best results for beard enthusiasts. While some brands stand out more than others, it's vital to understand the benefits of using beard oil in the first place. While carrier oils feed your beard with nutrients, it's the essential oils that provide the character to your beard oil. Each essential oil brings a unique set of benefits. Some oils like lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus are famous for their refreshing scent and antibacterial properties. Other oils such as peppermint, frankincense, sage, patchouli, and cedarwood oil have therapeutic attributes that help promote better beard health. Then there are ones like thyme and rosemary which contain compounds which can stimulate growth.

Recognizing the benefits of using beard oil is the first step to embracing a well-defined grooming regimen. Next, we'll explore strategies to select the right beard oil that matches your beard needs and lifestyle.

The "Big 4" Carrier Beard Growth Oils

When striving for a healthier, fuller beard it's important to consider using a beard growth oil that contains high-quality carrier oils. The four top carrier oils beneficial for optimal beard growth include:

  • Jojoba Oil: Known to combat sebum build-up, which contributes to a healthier beard
  • Argan Oil: Renowned for promoting beard softness and reducing itchiness, also has the most beneficial fatty acids
  • Avocado Oil: Excellent for addressing beard dandruff and promoting fullness

These oils are derived from the seeds, nuts, or kernels of plants. They offer essential nutrients and hydration which are key factors in stimulating beard growth. When making your selection for a beard growth oil, make sure these powerhouses are included in the ingredient list.

Look For These Ingredients In Your Beard Oil

Apart from the carrier oils, it's important to recognize the role essential oils play in beard growth and overall beard health. These oils not only enhance the fragrance of the beard product but also cater to the overall health and wellness of the beard. Especially beneficial essential oils include:

  • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antifungal properties, it can help keep beard dandruff at bay

  • Peppermint Oil: Improves blood flow and thereby enhances beard growth

By understanding the benefits of these essential oils, you'll be able to select a beard growth oil tailored to your specific beard needs.

Skin Oil & Facial Hair Genetics: A Factor in Beard Growth

Although, the type of oil you use for your beard is essential, your skin oil and genetics also play a critical role in beard growth. Everyone has a unique balance of oils in their skin that can affect the health and growth of facial hair. Therefore, it's essential to understand your skin's oil production and how it impacts your beard growth. This understanding will aid in identifying a beard oil that will complement your skin type and optimize the health and growth of your beard.

Pairing the understanding of your personal skin oil balance with the proper selection of carrier and essential oils can drastically improve your overall beard growth and health. These factors together will help you cultivate a well-nourished, hydrated, and thriving beard.

Do Beard Oils Work?

In our quest to achieve the perfect beard, we've faced a bunch of questions. Does beard oil work? Is it all myth or is there science backing the claims of enhanced beard growth?

Breath easy; there's solid science behind beard oils aiding in beard growth. Let us handle the explanation.

Beard oils primarily contain carrier oils like jojoba oil, argan oil, avocado oil, and sunflower oil. These oils hydrate and nourish the beard, providing essential nutrients that stimulate hair growth. For instance, jojoba oil mirrors the natural oil (sebum) our skin produces. It's essential for beard hydration and can prevent the dryness that often slows hair growth.

Then there are the typically fragrant essential oils like tea tree oil, orange oil, peppermint oil, and cedarwood oil. In addition to imparting an appealing smell to the beard, they contribute to overall beard health.

Naturally, it's not one-size-fits-all. Everyone's skin oil production and genetics are different. Understanding these individual factors is key in choosing the best beard oil combination.

Extension of beard care doesn’t need to stop at applying beard oil. It is absolutely alright to use beard oil along with other grooming products like beard balm, wax, or conditioner. Incorporating beard oil with other products fortifies the effects and launches a comprehensive approach to beard care.

A recommended sequence could be using Beard Shampoo and Conditioner as the first grooming steps. Post wash and condition, the beard's ability to absorb beard oil boosts, providing maximum hydration. Follow it up with Beard Balm. It is typically thicker than oil and offers styling along with conditioning. The next step would be using Beard Wax for a stronger hold on the beard, locking in moisture and taming flyaways.

Investing in a disciplined beard regime starts with using the right tools and techniques, understanding the products and their ingredients, and ends at a destination with a healthy, well-groomed, lush beard.

How to Apply Beard Oil: Step by Step

To leverage the potential that beard oil offers, it's more than just slapping it on and calling it a day. For peak results, it's important to apply beard oil effectively, which can be done in a few simple steps.

In the first instance, the ideal time to apply beard oil is right after a hot shower. The reason? The warm water has already gently coerced your facial pores to open up, leading to better oil absorption. Additionally, the skin is well-hydrated post-shower, presenting an optimal moment to lock in that moisture with beard oil.

If a shower isn't an option at the time, don't worry. Dampening your beard with warm water will also do the trick. However, remember it's crucial to avoid applying oil on a dry beard, as it can lead to poor absorption and an uneven spread.

Secondly, you might wonder about using beard oil alongside other tools in your beard care arsenal. Products like beard balms and waxes can work harmoniously with your oils, enhancing their effects. For instance, you can lock in moisture and control stray hairs with a beard balm applied after your oil. Additionally, if you're looking for a stronger hold, following your beard oil application with beard wax could be advantageous.

In essence, applying beard oil isn't as straightforward as it might seem. Its effects are greatly enhanced when used in conjunction with a consistent grooming regimen and other styling products. And by using the right techniques, your beard gets a chance to shine, potentially turning heads for all the right reasons.

Factors to Consider When Buying Beard Oils

So there you have it. We've explored the ins and outs of beard oil application. We've stressed the importance of using beard oil post-shower or after dampening your beard. This helps the oil penetrate deeply into the hair and skin, optimizing its benefits. Remember, beard oil isn't a standalone product. It can be used with other grooming essentials like beard balm and wax for maximum effect.

But it's not just about slapping on some oil and calling it a day. It's about using the right techniques, and more importantly, making it part of your daily grooming routine. This consistency is what will help you achieve that well-groomed beard you're aiming for.

So next time you're in the market for a beard oil, keep these tips in mind. Choose wisely, apply correctly, and let that beard of yours flourish.
