Perfectly simple: World's first X.O cognac
Ziv Lenchner longs for winter elegance and finds solace in a classic that will never grow old.
Winter isn't as elegant as it once was. The crackling fireplace replaced by an electric heater. Instead of long gentlemen's coats, lightweight synthetic alternatives prevail. Yet amidst this modern tumult, timeless classics still shine. Ones whose elegance never fades. Like HENNESSY X.O Cognac.
Sure, this winter took its time to make an appearance, and granted, it's not Europe here, even in winter. But settling for less is tiresome. So yes, a glass of Hennessy X.O Cognac, please.
The esteemed House of Hennessy has been crafting excellence since 1765. Founded by Richard Hennessy, an Irishman, its lineage continued with brilliance. Today, as part of the luxury conglomerate LVMH, nearly 50 million Hennessy bottles are sold annually worldwide. But let's talk about HENNESSY X.O.
The World's First XO Cognac
In this realm, XO signifies more than just copyrights. X.O stands for Extra Old, exceptionally aged. The category, originally encompassing cognac aged for at least six years (today, XO cognac must be aged for ten years or more), was defined by Maurice Hennessy in 1870 and embraced warmly by the entire cognac world.
According to legend, even the V.S.O.P category (cognac aged for at least four years) was born within the Hennessy House. It happened soon after England's destined king, George IV, requested, somewhere in the early 19th century, "Very Superior Old Pale" cognac. And who can refuse the King of England?
No doubt, Hennessy V.S.O.P is excellent, but X.O is the crown jewel. This intricate and rich cognac, crafted over 150 years ago, is a meticulous blend of about 100 different eaux-de-vie (clear brandy created from grape fermentation and distillation), embodying the essence of cognac. Grapes with high acidity undergo double distillation and prolonged aging, sometimes for decades.
The result is exactly what one would expect, and more. A potent and profound drink, boasting fruity, floral, and spicy aromas, with flavors of ripe and sweet fruits, black pepper, and even a hint of chocolate bitterness. A harmonious creation that inevitably became a symbol of high culture and sophistication.
In the past two decades, cognac, in general, and Hennessy in particular, especially X.O, has become a sought-after product among new audiences seeking luxury. Thus, Hennessy X.O has graced the lips and creations of leading American rappers and even found its place on the table of former North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il.
Drinking at the Right Time, with the Right Person
The phenomenon of affluent individuals embracing characteristics associated with good taste and high society is not new. Numerous international luxury brands can attest to that. Exquisite cognac is not meant to be hurried. When you have Hennessy X.O, it's natural for those capable to aspire to taste its excellence. And we, the humble ones, not ruthless dictators nor writers of songs about mistreating women and killing policemen, also want to revel in it.
Let it be clear, it's an investment. A bottle of Hennessy in Israel will cost between 700 to 800 shekels. But those who know its worth will invest in it wholeheartedly. Neat, with ice, or with very little water. My recommendation: reserve it for small moments of pleasure on real winter nights. This way, you can preserve your investment over time. On ice, with water, and most importantly: at the right time, with the right person.
