After years of anticipation, Apple's upcoming iOS 18 will enable call recording directly on iPhones, without third-party apps. The catch? The other party will know they're being recorded.

After years of envy towards their Android-using friends, iPhone users can finally breathe a sigh of relief: iOS 18 will introduce the long-awaited feature of call recording directly from the iPhone, without the need for third-party apps or workarounds.

In a demonstration at the WWDC 2024 developers' conference held last Monday, it was shown that the call recording option will appear on the screen during the call. Pressing the record button will start the recording and notify both parties in the call that the recording is active.

After the call, the transcription can be found in the Notes app, where users can also create an automatic summary using Apple Intelligence, Apple’s artificial intelligence model. Additionally, audio can be recorded and translated directly within the Notes app. However, automatic transcription will currently be available only in English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Portuguese.

Currently, call recording on iPhone is only possible through third-party apps, many of which are limited or require payment for full recording and transcription services. It remains unclear whether the new feature will be available to all iPhone users, only for calls between iPhone users, or perhaps only for those with iOS 18.
