According to a new report, Apple is set to begin mass production of a new AirPods model equipped with cameras. While not designed for selfies, these cameras could offer groundbreaking uses.

Apple's AirPods, already considered one of the most successful audio products globally, are on the brink of a major evolution. According to a new report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant plans to begin mass production of a new AirPods model with built-in cameras in 2026. This follows previous reports by Bloomberg on Apple's plans to develop AirPods with photo capabilities.

Kuo reports that the new AirPods will feature an infrared camera similar to those used in the Face ID systems of iPhones and iPads. Apple's apparent goal is to integrate the AirPods with its mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, and future eyewear.

Before you ask, the new AirPods camera may serve various purposes. Kuo suggests that the built-in camera could track users' hand movements, enabling gesture controls in the air or providing spatial audio solutions when used with the Vision Pro glasses, adapting sound based on the user's gaze direction.

Additionally, the report claims that the infrared camera in the AirPods could detect changes in the surrounding image, potentially allowing for air gesture controls to enhance human-device interaction.
