How can technology save cyclists' lives on Israeli roads?
Israeli roads have become increasingly dangerous in recent years. The danger is not only for vehicle users but also for cyclists riding alongside them. Here’s how to ensure your safety on the road.
Data on road accidents in Israel highlight just how dangerous cycling on the roads can be for cyclists. According to CBS data, each year, 10–12 cyclists are killed in accidents involving vehicles. In 2023, 10 cyclists were killed, and another 178 were injured, with approximately 70 sustaining severe injuries. Partial data for 2024 indicates that this troubling trend will likely continue this year as well.
In light of these grim statistics, it is important to emphasize the significance of using technological aids designed to prevent future accidents and save cyclists’ lives on the roads. In an age where technology is advancing and integrated into all areas of life, cyclists, too, benefit from improvements that reduce the dangers associated with road cycling.
Not many people know this, but Garmin, a company primarily known for its sports watches, is also active in the field of safety accessories for cyclists. For this article, we spoke with experts from Garmin who explained the technological solutions available for cyclists. “Our goal is to provide cyclists with tools that allow them to ride as safely as possible,” explains Yigal Gal Mualem, Customer Relations Manager at the company. “We understand that cycling on the roads is becoming increasingly dangerous, so any technological aid that can help cyclists feel safer is important.” For example, in Israel, the company currently offers two devices from the VARIA series, which can genuinely save lives.
The VARIA RTL515 device is a radar with a rear light capable of alerting cyclists to vehicles approaching from behind at a distance of up to 140 meters. The device’s uniqueness lies not only in the alerts it provides but also in its ability to improve cyclists' visibility on the road.
The VARIA functions such that while riding, two bars are displayed on the Garmin device’s interface. If the bars are green, the cyclist’s surroundings are safe and clear from behind. If the bars are red, it signals that the surroundings are not completely safe and that the cyclist should pay attention to potential road hazards or an approaching vehicle.
The second device, VARIA RCT715, combines a radar, a rear light, and a camera that records the cyclist’s route in real-time. Footage can be reviewed only after the ride to avoid distracting the cyclist and endangering nearby riders or other road users. The camera is intended to document what occurs behind the cyclist, and in the event of an unusual incident, such as an accident or another emergency, the video can be easily retrieved from the Garmin Connect app. This can provide documentation to help understand what happened and even serve as evidence if needed.
Of course, beyond Garmin devices, there are other technologies that can help cyclists maintain their safety:
Smart helmets with sensors capable of detecting falls and summoning help.Front and rear lights equipped with motion sensors that activate automatically when entering dark areas.Apps that allow cyclists to share their real-time location with family or friends.Additional systems also include smart navigation devices that enable cyclists to plan safer routes, avoid dangerous roads, and select paths suited to their individual skill levels. The integration of advanced technology can improve not only the cycling experience but also cyclists' personal safety.
Safety Starts With Awareness
Naturally, even the most advanced technology cannot prevent all accidents if cyclists themselves do not adhere to the required safety guidelines. It is important to understand road conditions, avoid cycling in hazardous areas at night, and ride cautiously with an awareness of the surrounding environment.
Experts Say: Aids Can Save Lives
Despite the troubling data on the number of accidents and injuries among cyclists in Israel, steps can be taken to reduce the risks. The use of technological aids can make the difference between a safe ride and a dangerous situation. Technology can be an important ally for every cyclist, whether riding alone or in a group, and it is worth using it to stay safe on the roads. Ultimately, every small step in this direction can save lives—and in this area, nothing is more important than that.
