Samsung and Google team up to unveil smart glasses next month
Samsung plans to unveil a prototype of its new AR glasses in January at the Galaxy S25 launch event. Developed with Google and Qualcomm, the lightweight glasses are inspired by Meta's Ray-Ban frames.
After numerous rumors and delays, it seems that Samsung is finally ready to reveal its new entry into the augmented reality world: AR glasses developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. However, before you rush to the nearest store, it's important to clarify—this is not a finished product.
The launch, which will likely take place during the Galaxy Unpacked event in January, where Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S25 series, will feature only a prototype of the glasses, similar to Meta's approach with its Orion glasses. So why all the secrecy? Well, it’s possible Samsung is still working out some details or simply wants to keep things under wraps for now.
What is known is that Samsung and Google have altered their original plans following the relatively underwhelming performance of Apple’s Vision Pro. Instead of bulky mixed-reality glasses, they decided to go for something lighter, akin to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses. In fact, based on rumors, the glasses will be relatively lightweight and slim, featuring a modern design that won’t scream "geek." Additionally, they will integrate seamlessly with Samsung's Galaxy ecosystem, allowing users to control them via their phone or smartwatch.
So, what exactly are AR glasses? In short, AR glasses "augment" reality by overlaying digital information onto what you see. Think of it as a transparent layer of information displayed in front of your eyes—navigation, messages, video calls—everything projected directly into your line of sight.
