The Jerusalem resident was injured in clashes that erupted amid the tensions leading up to Operation Guardian of the Walls.

A resident of Jerusalem died on Thursday night due to wounds sustained during clashes on the Temple Mount in 2021, Palestinian media reported on Friday.

The Jerusalem resident, identified as Hamza Abu Sneineh, was buried near the Lions Gate on Friday.

Abu Sneineh was treated at Hadassah Medical Center after being injured and was arrested during his treatment although he was later released, according to Palestinian reports. After suffering from ill health since being injured, his condition deteriorated and he died on Thursday night.

Abu Sneineh was injured after being hit by a rubber bullet during clashes which broke out as tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers gathered on the Temple Mount for the last Friday prayers of the month of Ramadan on May 7, 2021.

The clashes erupted amid tensions surrounding the planned eviction of a number of Arab families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. Tensions continued to rise and, just a few days later, Operation Guardian of the Walls was launched after rockets were fired toward Jerusalem during the Jerusalem Day flag march.

Hamas responded to Abu Sneineh's death on Friday, stating "As we condole the families and lovers of the heroic martyr, let us salute our struggling people who continue their revolution for the sake of Jerusalem and al-Aqsa, and our people will remain in their covenant with the martyrs and prisoners until the end of the occupation and the return of the homeland dear and liberated."
