Policeman accused of shooting MDA volunteer claims 'self-defense,' Mayor Huldai laments event
The fatal shooting during Saturday, which involved an off-duty police officer, resulted in the death of Jaffa resident and MDA volunteer Yaakov Tukhi.
An off-duty police officer who was accused of shooting and killing Yaakov Tukhi, a resident of Jaffa and volunteer with Magen David Adom (MDA), was set to be brought before the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court on Saturday evening regarding the extension of his detention.
Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai conveyed his condolences to Tukhi’s family, lamenting the loss.
“Last night, a serious incident occurred in Jaffa that should not have happened,” Huldai said.
The mayor continued by praising the memory of the deceased, saying that he was “a respected and well-known resident of Jaffa.”
Huldai further informed that the shooter argued with Tukhi, “for reasons currently under investigation by the police.”The mayor said that the police officer was arrested and called on the residents of Jaffa to maintain order.
Off-duty officer claims self-defense
The officer who killed Tukhi was interrogated by the police. He reportedly told them that he acted out of self-defense, fearing that the victim was attempting to stab him.
