Remembrance Day: Israel unveils number of fallen soldiers, terror casualties

The report showed that of the 760 soldiers who lost their lives this year, 711 were killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

With Remembrance Day next Monday, the Defense Ministry released data on Thursday about the number of fallen soldiers, and the National Insurance Institute reported the number of civilians murdered in terrorist attacks.

Since last Remembrance Day, 760 members of the security forces have died, and another 61 disabled soldiers passed away as a result of their wounds, the Defense Ministry reported.

Of the 760 soldiers who lost their lives this year, 711 of them were killed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the report said.

Among those who lost their lives during the war, 637 served in the IDF, 39 served in emergency response teams, 68 served in the Israel Police, and six served in the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency).

There are now 1,294 bereaved parents in the country, along with 248 widows, 520 orphans, and 2,174 bereaved siblings, or a total of 4,236 people, the Defense Ministry reported.

Since the year 1860, 25,034 people serving in Israel’s security forces have died while on duty, the report said.

Civilians who lost their lives due to terror incidents

Since last Remembrance Day, 834 civilians had been killed in terrorist attacks, the National Insurance Institute (NII) reported. Twelve of them were killed before the October 7 massacre, the report said.

The 834 victims included 531 men, 291 women, 40 children up to the age of 18, and 68 foreign citizens, it said.

Since Jewish settlements were established in Israel in 1851, some 5,100 civilians have been killed in terrorist attacks, including 782 children up to the age of 18, the NII reported.

There were 201 civilians among the hostages Hamas captured on October 7, including 106 who have returned to Israel, the report said.

The NII said it has paid more than NIS 3.1 million to the hostages who returned to Israel and has transferred about NIS 61 million to their families.
